The Final Countdown...er, Music Blogfest

Reposting an oldie. Wow, I'm not sure if all these would still be in my top 10, but I'd be hard pressed to choose something else over any of them.

This one is hosted by the spectacularly wonderful, awesome, superb and all-around nice, Alex J. Cavanaugh. Well, I have no idea if he's actually a nice guy or just plays one on the blogs, but he's nice to me and that's all that counts.

Okay, I've begun my vegan diet again, so I'm hopped up on raw veggies and nuts. Or maybe my fowl mood of late is drawing forth my whacked-out creative side. (Possibly I shouldn't have cut out the chicken...) In reality, I think it's all Alex's fault. He brought up this sweet music fest and I've been listening to even more music than usual this past week or so. And youtube searching like a fiend (which means serious Brandon Boyd overload. Serious.).

Music is my drug of choice. (All I wanted was a Pepsi. Just one Pepsi.) Whether upper or downer, goes with whatever I'm listening to at the moment and since I've been listening to so much, my mood is all over right now. Still, I'm having trouble narrowing my favorite 10 songs of all time. I think I like music too much to do that. It's like trying to pick my favorite kid - which, quite frankly, waffles between who's being the sweetest and who's doing the most chores.

But I digress.

I most absolutely definitely, and with utmost certainty have a numero uno favorite; it's just the other 9 I'm lacking. But, for Alex I'll do my best.

I'm lyrically driven, and in most of the choices I think that's fairly obvious. Click on the artists/songs for links to youtube videos.

So let me go on (big hands, I know you're the one). Here are Tara's Top Ten Songs that She Loves With all Her Cold Little Heart:

10. This is not even a band that would make my top 10 favorite band list. But, they are hands down one of the most talented group of musicians around. I'd never deny it, and they'd be in my top 5 most talented - probably top 3. Life is mine, I live it my way. So, open your mind for a different view:
Metallica, Nothing Else Matters

9. This one has two special ties. One happens to be the fact that it was my high school grad song. Yeah, I remember those days well. Which is surprising for someone so old.
Skid Row, I Remember You

8. This band was incredible live. The song  is what I do: ride the whims of my mind, commanding in another world, hearing and seeing a magic new dimension.
Queensryche, Silent Lucidity

7. Maybe I'm all messed up, but there is something about this song, and Trent Reznor, that resonates through my soul. He manages to write some serious undertones wrapped in [what on the surface appears to be] hot, and often, in-your-face raw sex. And, for me, his voice oozes sensuality in the majority of his songs. Maybe not so much this one, though. It [used to be] the prompt for my blog title, so of course it made the list.
Nine Inch Nails, The Only Time

6. I'm not even entirely sure whom to credit with this next song, but I can't get enough of it. It's on the tribute album to the lead singer of Snot, who died in a car accident when they were on the verge of Making It. I *think* the band wrote all the songs on there, but this one features Brandon Boyd on vocals.
Divided

5. I could listen to the Galore album from these guys for days on end. One of the best ever love songs, and so aptly titled.
The Cure, Love Song

4. The only female act to make my list. I just noticed that. Interesting. I love lots of woman-written songs. Guess they just aren't my absolute favorites. These gals sure are. They're magic, in fact.
Heart, Magic Man

3. The only "new" band on the list! Not that I don't love a lot of new stuff, even consider some my favorite, but they've yet to stand the test of time. This one will. I know it.
Shinedown, Sound of Madness

2. You all knew it was coming, right? I could never, ever exclude Incubus from the list. In all honesty, they would hold at least 5 spots on top ten. It's not obsession; I really love their music that much. My biggest problem is which to pick. My favorite changes with mood: Admiration, Just a Phase, Warning, Pardon Me, Privilege, Circles, Nowhere Fast...But this one goes with my every mood.
Incubus, The Warmth

1. There are no words. John says them all. This is, undeniably, my Favorite All Time Song. It has been since I can remember, and it always will be. Just Imagine, for real.

Imagine! One of the most well-known, popular songs of all time. Good list.

Awesome list! I definitely have to agree with quite a few on there. I love me some Heart and Lennon.
Erinn said…
Love it--- heart is an very cool touch.

I think I'm going to poke around on your blog and maybe hit the follow button.
Imagine is one of my faves too. John Lennon sure had a lot of different "looks" over the years, didn't he?

John Lennon's Imagine has great words. Super picks.

I've come to like Shinedown too, surprisingly enough. I'm rather curmudgeonly about new music. :)
You're a rockin' girl!
Thanks for the sweet comments. Sorry this caused so much agony, but that's for participating.

Heart, first one I've seen mention those wonderful female rockers :) Imagine, the only song by Beetles I like. Great Job!

all great choices, and a little metal edge going there! :D Music's my drug of choice, too. I think it has something to do w/the creativity thing. ;p but yik! Vegan diet... good luck w/that~ ;o) <3

ohman!!! imagine almost made my list too!!! (it's the only one of these i know) :)

Great choices! Sometimes the most meaningful songs are the ones we have the special connections with, i.e. Skid Row with your graduation.

LTM - I look like quite the metalhead here, don't I? Odd, because I never really was. Straight Rock/alternative rock has always been more my thing. And, as a product of the 80's, I definitely had a little pop phase.

Stephen - Favorite band or not, they definitely have some incredible songs!

Jules - Heart is in my top 10 favorite bands.

Kitty - Love them!

Alex - no worries, it was a sweet, sweet agony ;)

Summer - I wonder if that's a 20's thing? I didn't like much new stuff in my 20's either. Now, I love a lot of the stuff I never listened to then. And I really love new stuff.

Clarissa - John Lennon. *sigh*

Debra - He sure did! Never noticed till I watched them all together like that!

Erinn - Thanks for stopping by. I'll be around to check yours soon.

Adriana - Thanks.

Angela - It will always be my fave.

Diane - I actually went to the show for the opening band (Suicidal Tendencies) and when Queensryche did that song, it blew me away!

Vicki - It was hard to choose the song from them!
Tara said…
Jeffrey - I agree. That one never would have made my list had it held special meanings :)

Imagine is a beautiful song, heartbreaking because it's filled with such hope.

You're one up on me, I've no women on my list. If I did, though, it would be Ann and Nancy. One of the characters in my first book is called the Magic Man based on this song.

Wonderful list, Tara. Love the shoutout to the Suicidal Tendances. :) All of these are in my playlist.

This is a great list...I've really enjoyed looking at everyone's favorite songs. I can't believe I didn't put Nothing Else Matters on my list. I'm not a Metallica fan but I do really love that song.

Rockin' list! I love Queensryche and Skid Row! Silent Lucidity is so beautiful and Geoff Tate and Sebastian Bach are both excellent vocalists.
Diverse list. I don't know all 10, but hey, maybe we will all find new songs out of this.

A rockin list. And Lennon. You don't need to say any more.

I know exactly what you mean about music being a drug of choice - I can spend hours immersed in the melodies and lyrics of a band or artist. Thanks for sharing!

Oh here you are Tara!? I think I lost you in my blog roll or something. After the blogfest I'll have to be sure you're added. Can't imagine what happened - but some time ago I noticed I dropped of a lot of blogs and I never figured out why.

Anyway - - have you heard Perfect Circle sing Imagine? It has a kinda dark undertone to it.

I love you choices, and I sympathize with having to choose only ten. Really difficult . .

Love your list. And "Imagine" is definitely a great song.

Love Metallica, and ADORE "Silent Lucidity". nice choices :)
Metalicca is great, even my mom likes this album with Nothing Else Matters (Enter the Sandman, I believe. I'm terrible with album names.) Skid Row, yep! I thought Sebastian was going to grow up much more handsome than he ended up. I was young and had a dim perspective of him in the '80's, perhaps. Great list!

This is a great list. And I totally agree with your description of Trent Reznor.

Oh yes, I completely forgot to exclaim over that - I Remember You is definitely one of the greatest songs ever!
One other thing I don't forget is the letter Sebastian Bach wrote to Rolling Stone, right after Cobain committed suicide. I've looked for it online, but sadly I'll have to hunt around in a closet and scan my copy. Anyway, he described holding his son and listening to Lennon's Beautiful Boy, and wondered how Cobain could have left his child behind like that.
Mary Aalgaard said…
I think Lennon's "Imagine" should be played every day in every corner of the world. It's brilliant and so was he. Thanks for the musical interlude. sigh

Really sorry I missed this blogfest.

You've got some great picks. Your #1, Nothing Else Matters, is actually the song for my epilogue of Watcher.

Some of the others I'm not familiar with. I'll be checking those out.

My latest music addiction? Radiohead. I've got half a dozen of their songs on my Forbidden Doorways playlist - Lucky, Pyramid Song, How to Disappear Completely, I Might Be Wrong, and several others.

Anyhow, I enjoyed reading your list, and I'm sure I'll enjoy listening to the music even more!
